Beyond Coping: How I learned to stop worrying about remote/online OST and thrive with it | Tues 1/18 , 11am-12pm
With change comes opportunity: Whether we like it or not, the out-of-school-time world has changed since the pandemic. OST programs have incorporated more virtual components, have grown to reach unexpected audiences, and have used technologies in new ways. They also face new challenges. At this Hive NYC meet up, come join us to reflect on ways your programs have evolved in the last two years, and learn from others. We’ll use a framework developed during the YES 2020 initiative as a tool to discuss these changes and envision possible futures that center digital equity for youth during continued challenging times.

NOVEMBER 2021
Working the Network: Approaches for Connecting Youth to New Community-based Opportunities| Tues 11/16, 11am-12pm
Wondering how to best connect young people to new meaningful opportunities across the City? At our November meetup, we will revisit key takeaways from the Brokering Youth Pathways toolkit, and hear from a panelist of Hive partners and new friends who have tried out different approaches to helping youth identify next steps. We’ll consider the successes and challenges of doing this work in different settings — from a formal youth empowerment training pipeline, to whole-school brokering initiatives, and an annual city-wide event. We’ll take time to reflect on how we can strengthen these initiatives network-wide.
Panelists:
- Jeff Paladino, Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School
- Meredith Summs , Mouse Inc and Hive NYC’s Emoti-Con Youth Digital Media Project Fair
- Mikell Ford of DreamYard and an Emoti-Con alumni committee member

SEPTEMBER 2021
How Youth Navigate the Current Chaos of the Digital World | Tues 9/21, 12-1pm
The Hive NYC community has always paid close attention to young people’s relationships with the online world—what kind of digital spaces they’re spending time in, how they’re expressing themselves using new tools, how their interests and cultural practices intersect with the digital world. Going back more than a decade ago as we considered the groundbreaking work of Mimi Ito and her colleagues in Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out, we’ve taken seriously what it means to take into account youths’ digital lives in the context of our youth-serving programs.
In this meet-up, we’ll be joined by Monica Bulger and Mary Madden of the Cooney Center, who will share findings from their recent research in this area. How are youth navigating what the internet looks like in 2021? How do they manage the chaos of our current news and information ecosystem? How are they driving their self-directed learning in new ways?
Following their presentation, we will be joined by a panel of youth respondents who will respond to the findings shared by Monica and Mary, reflecting on both their own and their peers’ experiences in the digital sphere and how it relates to what youth researchers are seeing.
