Media History Timeline

Transforming a paper-based tool into a youth-driven digital learning resource.

Global Action Project’s mission is to work with young people most affected by injustice to build the knowledge, tools and relationships needed to create media for community power, cultural expression, and political change. One of its core workshops is the Media History Timeline, a popular paper-based, user-generated learning resource that explores media’s role in society by connecting it to the personal experience of youth.
For the Media History Timeline project, Global Action Project empowered a group of ten youth to re-imagine and redesign its existing Media History Timeline tool into an interactive online experience. Over eight months, the group participated in a series of workshops to gain the competencies and skills to help them envision and develop a blueprint for a web-based interactive tool where users could plot their experience according to significant historical moments.
At the workshops, the youth dived into the structure and goals of the Media History Timeline workshop, they learned about the principles of visual design and user interaction, and experimented with digital tools and software applications. The group also formed three production committees to ensure smooth progress of the digital blueprint. The visual design committee developed a set of design principles, the content architecture committee mocked up a timeline on the history of racial profiling using JS Timeline, and the interaction/user experience (UX) committee created a flow chart to map out how they want the user to travel through the timeline.
At Global Action Project’s End of Year Screening event, the team of designers presented their design process and outlined the next steps of developing the Media History Timeline into a functioning online tool.

This project was funded by the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund in The New York Community Trust in 2012 and 2013.
